Farm Description: This month's visit is in the Dunnigan Hills where Tule Farms has their 140 head of cattle grazing. The oak trees are just popping bud and are at the gorgeous green chartreuse stage. We will be going to one of their family picnic sites that takes us through the foothill oak woodlands with the Brodeia wildflowers blooming, past barns, and onto a lone-tree hill overlooking the agriculture of the Central Valley. There is a view of the Sutter Buttes all the way Sierra. An amazing opportunity!

The Durst family settled in Hungry Hollow in 1872 via Wisconsin and originally from Diesbach, Switzerland. In Switzerland, the families were dairy farmers and they continued that tradition here in Yolo County. The cows would be milked daily, and they would meet the train in Dunnigan and ship the milk to San Francisco.

Fritz Durst is a UC Davis graduate and farms his family's 7,000 acres which includes cattle in the hills to alfalfa, seed crops, and asparagus and wine grapes in the valley, to rice down near Knights Landing.
